Always wanted to write for a magazine... |
Call this my audition piece. I've been a writer for as long as i can remember. I am someone that is not often self motivated, so i have to run with any creative idea that pops into my head and stays there. This blog is hopefully an entertaining one, and a showcase of some sort of talent. The magazine industry is hard to break into, i had to do something to get noticed. Fingers crossed... |
I recently heard the news that they’re doing a Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie. But before you all get excited, I’ve got to tell you that it’ll be a remake of the 1992 Kristy Swanson film, not the 1996-2003 Joss Whedon juggernaut. With Warner Brothers supposedly reigniting the story, minus Whedon and the entire TV cast, I thought I’d rebel (tamely granted) with a little post of Buffy-ness, consisting of some Sarah Michelle Gellar magazine covers, and a bit of a “where are they now” moment. So here goes…
Most people know about Fox’s TV smash that lit up our screens towards the end of the 90s and into the 2000s; Sarah Michelle Gellar and her “Scoobys” staking and innovating all over our televisions on a weekly basis. Musical episodes, silent episodes, every one a climactic and energetic back and forth between an exciting cast who knew they were part of something special. It’s a dynamic that none of the participants has been able to duplicate since, be it Sarah Michelle Gellar in her many movie and TV roles, Eliza Dushku in “Doll House” or Nicholas Brendon (Xander) in whatever fast food chain he went on to work at. Just kidding :) Even the mighty Whedon didn’t have it all his own way after leaving the series behind. The afore mentioned “Doll House” was a flop, and while both “Firefly” and “Serenity” were two of my favourite Whedon products, not a lot of other people seemed to agree. Of course 2012 is a different time for the Buffy supremo, and Whedon is now head honcho on two of the year’s runaway hits in “Avengers Assemble” and “Cabin in the Woods”.
But back in the day, as the millennium drew to a close, Whedon and his cast were churning out some of the best television I think I’ll ever see. Cliffhanger after cliffhanger left me cursing the week for being so long when a Buffy episode finished, and the show’s main character was a powerhouse nobody saw coming.
Before Buffy, Sarah Michelle Gellar was playing small roles in TV movies and go-nowhere series. She was an unknown that the studio took a chance on and reaped hefty rewards. From the first episode the actress and character went from strength to strength, and by the end viewers were left with a legacy and a body of work that could only be marvelled at. So forgive me this blatant nostalgia laden post, which completely reveals my geekdom to you all. While the “alternative” nature of my blog may have lead people to believe I would be championing Faith over the Buffster (by the way Eliza Dushku is a goddess, and should be working more!), I have to give credit to the original and best vampire vanquisher.
Before the crutch of the “sexy vampire show” and the Twilight saga, there was one programme that pushed boundaries and entertained millions. Now trying to cash in on the popularity of the Pattinson posse, one studio has chosen to sully the name of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” by remaking it for 2012 without any of the TV cast involved. It’ll be a travesty for me as a fan of the show, and with rumours that Megan Fox and Vanessa Hudgens are being considered to wield their very own “Mr Pointy”, I can’t see it being any good for the neutral either.
But for now followers, I bring you some classic magazine covers from the original Buffy heyday, and the wonder that was and is Sarah Michelle Gellar…
